About Positive Action in Housing...
Positive Action in Housing is a Scottish wide charity working with communities and others to enable everyone to have an equal chance to live in good quality, affordable and safe homes, free from discrimination and the fear of racial harassment and violence. We provide a casework service for those facing homelessness, racist attacks or poor housing conditions. We provide housing related advice and information to new migrants, refugees and established minority ethnic communities. We assist asylum seekers to challenge poverty, racial attacks, destitution and inhumane dawn raids. We provide a Hardship Fund for destitute asylum seekers with no recourse to public funds. We run a volunteering programme and support anti-racist campaigns. We inform social policy from a grassroots perspective. We offer training, consultancy and best practice guidance to tenants groups, housing providers, BME/refugee agencies and others.

refugees and asylum seekers
Since April 2000, more than 12,000 asylum seekers from 28 nationalities have been placed in Glasgow’s empty, unwanted houses under the government’s forced dispersal scheme. They are being accommodated in 2,500 units in often-deprived areas where they face epidemic levels of racist harassment and attacks. Around 50% will receive a positive decision and many will remain in Scotland, leading to a doubling in the overall minority ethnic population. Other local authorities are also accepting asylum seekers but on a much lesser scale.

Strong Roots to Grow From...
History & Achievements 1989 - 1995
Briefly...
In the 1950s and 1960s, the provision of suitable housing for people from ethnic minority communities was not considered a priority. The consequences of this policy continue to be felt today.
