couple2004.jpgWe can't show you their faces, or tell you their names or which country they're from. He is a highly skilled doctor, 68 years old, and has a serious heart problem. They had to flee their home and country.

Why? Because he was doing his job as a doctor and a senior government official did not want him to.  They sent their children into hiding, and got on the first flight away. They had to leave and lost everything. There was no choice. It is not safe for them to return.

You’d think they would get help but their asylum claim was refused. Their NASS support was stopped. Sheriff Officers instructed by the Council issued an eviction order. They aren’t allowed recourse to public funds, i.e. homeless units, hostels. The street was their only option. When they came to us, they were relying on handouts from neighbours, and visiting the mosque for meals. We supported them on a weekly basis out of our hardship fund. Our caseworkers argued for Social Work to provide housing. You can help us help others.

Positive Action in Housing Ltd is a Scottish wide charity working with communities, housing providers, voluntary organisations and faith groups to enable everyone to have an equal chance to live in good quality, affordable and safe homes, free from discrimination and the fear of racial harassment and violence.

We offer advice, information and support to people from new migrant, refugee and minority ethnic communities. We run a free, confidential and impartial casework service for those facing poverty, homelessness, racism or poor housing. We run a Hardship Fund and provide emergency shelter and practical resources for destitute asylum seekers and their families.

We provide volunteering and sessional work opportunities. We support human rights and anti-racist campaigns. We inform social policy from a user-led perspective. We offer training, consultancy and best practice guidance to Registered Social Landlords, voluntary organisations and minority ethnic/refugee organisations.

Positive Action in Housing is independent of any political group, religious creed, ideology or economic faction.
