Czesc, Jak się masz? I have just got back from Poland , hence the reason why I am acting smart! I was there to set up an exchange with some young people from Krawkow (Bochia) and Glasgow. That’s not all I have been doing…

In the next few weeks we will have a new PAIH website ready for you and with it, a brand new Quickmail, so keep your eyes peeled! I am also still working with Omer on our new directory (he is doing well). The closing date was a few weeks ago, but we have extended this slightly as we are still receiving submissions, so add your organisation online - www.paih.org/directory09. We will publish the directory later this year and it will be available online, so why not?

OK, enough about me; this week, we will send out our first ever ‘Destitution Bulletin’ with facts, figures and real life stories about our service users, volunteers and staff. I have it here and it looks really impressive. We will aim to get this online and send to everyone who has signed up for the bulletin, so if you want it, email your details to home@paih.org.

We have been adding loads of stories to our wordpress site (www.paihnews.wordpress.com), some of the comments are a little mad, so feel free to drop it like it’s hot and let us know your feelings on the articles we post. Bye, (I should have really said that in Polish, so Czesc) Jamie

BME Involvement in Housing Association Governance - Launch Event

LintelTrust is holding two events in Edinburgh (on 22nd April 10-1pm) and Glasgow (25th April 10-1pm) to launch two reports funded by the Big Lottery's 'Investing in Ideas' grant.  The reports aim to assist Scottish housing associations to encourage more people from BME backgrounds into their decision-making processes, and to learn more about the needs of their BME residents.  Places are limited, but if you would like to attend either event, please e-mail linteltrust@sfha.co.uk for more details and to secure your place.

Welcome? DVD

‘Welcome?’ is a DVD compilation that contains five short films that show the effects of the UK’s policies and offer practical suggestions on doing something about it.

It includes the film Welcome which shows how asylum seekers are forced into destitution. It follows the stories of three people as they try to survive destitution. Taking Action is a new film resource that gives examples of what you can do to help end this suffering. “My life is frozen” says a Zimbabwean maths teacher who has been on the streets since being evicted from his flat “I’m existing, but it’s not a life…”

The DVD contains and easy-to-use Action Pack that gives more detail on what you can do to end destitution.

Also included in this DVD is other films made by the award winning Camcorder Guerillas including Voice Seekers which traces the stories of four refugees – why they fled their homelands, they experiences in Scotland and hopes and dreams for the future, Visit Dungavel shows the detention nightmare and Those Left Behind shows the effects of removals on the wider community.

The Welcome DVD is free for asylum seekers/refugees and people on low incomes. Otherwise we ask for a donation. Some suggested donations are £15 for individuals and £75 for organisations. £15 will pay for one night hostel accommodation, £5 will pay for food for a day and £75 will help pay for a week’s accommodation.

Money raised will directly support destitute asylum seekers. For multiple copies please telephone 0141 353 2220 to discuss, before ordering or email quickmail@paih.org
