Tribute to Rev Brian Shackleton, a longstanding supporter of our humanitarian work

4 March 2025

We would like to pay tribute to the late Revd Brian Shackleton who has left a generous donation in his will to support our work with Palestinian and Syrian refugees. Brian was dedicated to justice and inclusion and this gift is testament to his lifelong commitment to standing with displaced communities and ensuring they receive the support and dignity they deserve.

A deeply compassionate Methodist minister, Brian spent over six decades serving communities, shaping lives, and advocating for peace and justice. His commitment extended beyond the church, from establishing youth and community groups, supporting disadvantaged children and their families, to offering his home as a place of sanctuary.

In 2004/5, Brian lived in Palestine as an Ecumenical Accompanier, witnessing firsthand the daily realities of occupation. He spoke at a meeting attended by former US President Jimmy Carter, sharing the voices of young Palestinians longing for security, freedom, and the right to live without fear. His advocacy for Palestine continued throughout his life, always linking their struggle to the broader injustices faced by displaced people around the world.

Brian’s generosity and kindness were not limited to his words as a speaker and preacher — he lived his values every day. He had offered to host refugees through our Room for Refugees programme, ensuring those in crisis had a safe place to stay. His legacy now lives on through his generous donation, which will directly support Palestinian and Syrian refugees in urgent need.

We are deeply grateful for Brian’s compassion, solidarity, and unwavering commitment to justice and honoured to be part of carrying this forward through providing sanctuary and hope to those who need it most.
