On Friday 11 September, the body of Mercy Baguma (also known as Masitula Baguma Nakendo) was driven from Edinburgh, Scotland to Manchester Airport. Mercy’s body will then be flown to Entebbe, Uganda on 12 & 13 September 2020 for burial in her home town of Bugiri in Eastern Uganda on Monday.
Eric Nnanna wants to mark the occasion of the burial for their baby son Adriel with a socially distanced, candle lit silent vigil to remember Mercy’s life.
Elder Park is a place that Mercy loved. She and Eric spent some happy days there with baby Adriel. Elder Park was gifted to the people of Govan, Glasgow in 1885 by Isabella Elder one of many women in Scotland to realise the benefits of parks to local communities.
Please bring candles, photos of Mercy.
Robina Qureshi said:
“It’s sad that Mercy can’t be buried in Glasgow because Adriel won’t be able to visit his mothers grave and lay flowers, there are so many who loved and cared for her, but it’s important that she is laid to rest. And hopefully, one day Adriel will be able to visit his mothers grave in Eastern Uganda, with his dad.
“The priority is to ensure that Adriel has a secure future in Glasgow. We are pleased that Boris Johnson as UK Prime Minister has agreed to intervene in this case with the Home Secretary to assist the family to resolve their asylum situation quickly so that Eric and his little boy can begin to rebuild their lives. He extends his thanks to David Linden MP for pressing his case.
“Our focus next week is to ensure that a trust fund is set up with the help of an established Glasgow law firm. Total funds raised are over £75,000, donate by the kind hearted people of Glasgow, across Scotland and the world. The remainder – after funeral costs are met – will be invested for Adriel’s future welfare.
“Finally, we are renewing our call for a public inquiry into the deadly accommodation crisis in Glasgow. More details can be found on our blog posts on www.paih.org. For now we want to remember Mercy and allow Eric, and Mercy’s friends to process their grief in private.”

** A socially distanced outdoor gathering on Saturday does not break any laws. A law will come into effect from Monday 16 Sept that limits the number of people meeting up indoors or outdoors to a maximum of 6 (from a max of 2 households). The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is encouraging people to follow this from now, but that’s a suggestion. From Monday it is law.
