Chooi
Chooi Leng To and her husband, facing significant energy debt, received crucial support from Positive Action in Housing, reducing their debt considerably through negotiations with creditors and energy providers.
Chooi Leng To, 45, is registered blind and lives with her husband, who also acts as her carer while working part-time. They got in touch when they accumulated astronomical bills for energy use.
After the couple switched energy providers, they received repeated text messages from the energy company demanding payment for nearly two years. Since they received no formal letters, they dismissed them as scams. They were then shocked to receive a £3,362 bill from a debt agency.
Worried about the situation, they sought help from one of our caseworkers. We contacted her creditors, eventually reducing the bill back to the original amount, along with a letter of apology. The couple were very grateful.
Meanwhile, another energy provider demanded £18,000 based on estimated readings. After repeatedly submitting final readings, the energy company wrote off £14,000 of the debt. In total, we helped the couple clear over £17,000 in debt.
You’ve made a significant difference by lifting the burden of debt. Thank you for being there when I needed it most.
