What is it about?
Successive legislation has pushed people seeking asylum in the UK further and further from the mainstream, making life for people waiting for decisions of asylum applications and people with status increasingly difficult. This course explores how the asylum system works from the perspective of a claimant and the process involved in making a claim for asylum. The course also explores the journeys and barriers faced by both refugees and asylum seekers reaching and building a new life in Scotland and their respective entitlement to services.
Learning Outcomes
• Have an overview of the basic legislative and policy background to the rights of people seeking asylum and refugees.
• Understand more about why people come to the UK to seek asylum and what their journeys involve.
• Understand more about how the legal process of seeking asylum works in practice.
• Understand more about people’s rights to housing and support during and after their asylum application process.
• Understand why and when destitution happens.
• Be more aware of how people may find a route out of destitution.
