Our main campaign of 2020/21. Stop the deadly accommodation crisis affecting Glasgow’s asylum seekers. The Mears contract is set to run for another 9 years. Add your name to thousands of others calling for a public inquiry into multiple duty of care failings since March 2020, and in particular the circumstances that led to the death of Adnan Walid Elbi in the McLays Hotel in Glasgow on May 6; the Park Inn tragedy on June 26; and the circumstances surrounding the death of Mercy Baguma on 22 August 2020.

Winter Appeal 2020.
The refugee crisis has not gone away. Certainly not in Glasgow which has the biggest asylum population in the UK due to the policy of forced dispersal for the past 20 years. We are raising funds for our annual Winter Appeal, which helps vulnerable refugee and asylum seeking individuals & families living in poverty in Glasgow to survive Covid 19 during the harsh winter and throughout the year. A regular monthly payment – from as little as £10 a month – is a lifeline. Our ability to help people in greatest need depends hugely on grants from charitable trusts, and donations from the public. Annually, we distribute £60,000 through our Emergency Relief Fund. The Fund makes a big difference for asylum seekers with little or no money. The Fund’s assessment process is designed to help people survive so they can focus on legal resolution and regaining independence.

Donate stuff.
Donate new or nearly new items directly to refugees and asylum seekers who are in need. It could be a sofa or a rice cooker, PPE or cleaning products. Just complete this one minute form. (This stops the unnecessary build up of donations in a crisis and directs stuff where it needs to go). Once you do this, our volunteers will match items with refugees and asylum seekers who need it and contact you.
Donate your spare mobile phone …
Do you have a spare Smart Phone, Laptop, iPads or Wi-fi Dongles. This is a lifeline for refugee mothers who are home schooling children, for students and those who need to keep in touch with lawyers or GPs. Just erase the contents, and reset your device. For IPhones, delete the phone from Find My IPhone. Sanitise it, then pop it in a Jiffy bag and donate to us so we can pass it onto people who can benefit.

Donate a roadworthy bike.
Bus travel for asylum seekers is prohibitively expensive. If you have an “Aspen card”, it’s impossible to use it on the bus. And those who have been dispersed to the outskirts of Glasgow are very isolated. This makes it difficult to reach essential services like lawyers, GP appointments or other support networks. There are huge waiting lists for bikes so this small project has a very specific goal – to help asylum seekers in the centre of Glasgow to access Next Bike subscriptions or roadworthy bikes. We have a small and dedicated team of volunteers and bike experts leading this work. Just email home@positiveactionh.org and we will get things moving, and even introduce you to the person the bike is going to. If you can donate a helmet and bike repair kit, even better!
