Right now, in Glasgow, there are families too frightened to sleep for fear of dawn raids on their homes, after a negative decision. They are being terrorised because they have the status of “asylum seeker”.This barbaric practice has no place in a civilised society.
16 years ago, we led a strong campaign with support from across civic society against dawn raids until they were brought to an end. Public anger was such that on several occasions, protestors barricaded the Home Office building and stopped immigration enforcement vans leaving Brand Street in Govan.
It’s strange that public money is being spent on these expensive dawn raids, especially as the numbers of asylum seekers into this country have dramatically fallen, and the proportion of those who win their asylum cases have never been higher.
Are Scottish authorities cooperating with dawn raids? Questions now need to be asked. For example, what information and cooperation is provided by Scottish authorities e.g. Police Scotland, Social Work, to facilitate Immigration enforcement squads to burst into innocent families’ homes? What is the protocol for these dawn raids? Will the Scottish Government make it’s position clear and condemn dawn raids and pledge that Scottish authorities don’t co-operate with such barbaric practices and tell the Home Office clearly: “Asylum might be reserved to Westminster but human rights is not”?
