Commenting on a dawn raid in Glasgow today which led to the local community blocking immigration raid vans, Robina Qureshi, Director of Positive Action in Housing said:
“We have seen a brilliant show of support from the local community for their neighbours from immigrant and asylum seeking backgrounds who right now in Glasgow, are too frightened to sleep for fear of dawn raids happening to them in their homes, where they are meant to be safe. They are being effectively terrorised. This shameful practice has no place in a civilised society.
“16 years ago, we campaigned with support from across civic society until dawn raids were brought to an end. Public anger was such that on several occasions, protestors barricaded the Home Office building and stopped immigration enforcement vans leaving Brand Street in Govan. They had to stop because we protested.
“Are Scottish authorities cooperating with dawn raids? What information and cooperation is provided by Scottish authorities e.g. Police Scotland, Social Work, to facilitate Immigration enforcement squads to burst into innocent families’ homes? What is the protocol for these dawn raids? Will the Scottish Government make it’s position clear and pledge that Scottish authorities will not co-operate with Westminster’s ugly Hostile Environment and such barbaric practices and tell the Home Office clearly: “Asylum might be reserved to Westminster but human rights and Scotland’s conscience is not”?
