Safe Deposits grant strengthens our migrant rights work in Govanhill, preventing homelessness and supporting Roma communities

Positive Action in Housing is delighted to announce that we have received a grant of £22,335 from the Safe Deposits Scotland Charitable Trust towards our Migrant Rights Project.

The Migrant Rights Project supports new migrants from various EU nationalities, focusing primarily on Romanian Roma people in Glasgow's Govanhill area. Our aim is to help them understand their housing, employment, and welfare rights, access quality housing, pursue education, and develop employability skills to enhance their long-term stability and quality of life.
The Safe Deposits Scotland Charitable Trust is a grant giving charity designed to promote education, training and best practice in Scotland's private rented sector.
The generous donation will help sustain the Migrants Rights Project, assisting clients in fulfilling their obligations as both tenants and landlords in the private rental sector. Last year, funding supported us to help 130 beneficiaries. In the coming year, this funding will allow our multilingual casework team to continue providing essential education, advice, and resources to new migrants. Additionally, it will support our team in further developing their mediation skills, enabling them to offer improved services and continue assisting our beneficiaries.
Our Project Lead, Iain Chisholm, has shared the following statement,
“The Romanian Roma people we work with in Govanhill face huge rent increases, the threat of eviction and the struggle to find affordable accommodation in an increasingly popular area. The accessible, high-quality advice we provide with SDSCT funding, in people's first language, prevents homelessness and all the human and financial costs involved.”
Safe Deposits Scotland Charitable Trust has supported our project and charity for many years. We are deeply grateful for their continued commitment and for recognising the value of our work, which enables us to keep supporting migrants in Glasgow.
