Serco lock change evictions – appeal plans underway amid fears of winter destitution

“Govan Law Centre has been instructed to make an application to the Inner House of the Court of Session to seek permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court in the case of Ali v. Serco Ltd, Compass SNI Ltd and the Secretary of State for the Home Department. That application is being prepared at present and will be lodged in Edinburgh shortly. We believe the decision of the Inner House of the Court of Session raises many issues of general pubic importance in Scotland, and indeed the UK, which ought to considered by the UK Supreme Court.

We are deeply concerned that around 150 or more vulnerable asylum seekers are at risk of being evicted by Serco and made destitute in Glasgow. Accordingly, the Board of Govan Law Centre has agreed to donate £5,000 to Positive Action in Housing (PAiH) with respect to the life saving work that they will undertake with destitute asylum seekers in Glasgow this winter. We will continue to work very closely with PAiH to develop more services for those in need. Govan Law Centre fully supports and appreciates their mission and fantastic humanitarian efforts in our city”
