We back buffer zones to protect refugee families and individuals

After far right protests outside asylum accommodation in several Scottish cities, Positive Action in Housing is backing buffer zones to protect families and children where they live, as the Scottish Government considers new measures.
We were quoted in today's Herald, The Ferret and Third Force News as charities responded to far right protests outside hotels housing people seeking asylum in Scotland.
Demonstrations outside accommodation in Dundee, Perth, Falkirk and Aberdeen last summer led to arrests, including for offences linked to hate crime, and created serious fear and distress for people living inside the hotels, including children. In response, Scottish Government ministers have confirmed they are considering whether protest exclusion zones should be introduced around asylum accommodation.
Positive Action in Housing said that protests targeting where people live cross a clear line and put already vulnerable families at risk:
“We would support the idea of buffer zones around accommodation for refugees. A line has to be drawn. Protesters outside hotels where people are living are causing refugee families and individuals to fear for their lives. Children as well as adults are being targeted where they live and try to feel safe. Buffer zones could provide protection, as the right to protest does not give the right to intimidate or terrorise vulnerable people who are already being unfairly scapegoated and demonised.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Government said that targeting asylum accommodation creates real fear and alarm and is completely unacceptable, confirming that ministers are examining the policy and legal options around protest exclusion zones, with next steps to be set out.
